The Black Ghost was announced in 2019 as part of ComiXology’s wave of creator-owned titles, and it followed reporter Laura Dominguez as she tried to figure out who the masked campaigner known as The Black Ghost was. The character returns for a second season in a new 5-issue miniseries from Amazon’s Comixology Originals digital entertainment line, which will be released in August.
Co-writers Alex Segura and Monica Gallagher, illustrator George Kambadais, colorist Ellie Wright, letterer Taylor Esposito, and editor Greg Lockard are all returning from the first Black Ghost series.
According to the second season summary, Lara is in for some new adventures this time around:
Lara Dominguez is a reporter who relocates to Creighton from her homeland of Miami. Lara will have to navigate the corruption of her chosen city, the ambiguities of virtue, and her own personal demons while she is there.
Alex Segura, co-writer of The Black Ghost: A Novel, is thrilled to return to the universe of The Black Ghost: A Novel, following the success of his outstanding novel Secret Identity.
“We started to think of more after Hard Revolution, the first arc in our series, was received so warmly – and received attention from places like The Hollywood Reporter, The New York Times, Publishers Weekly, and a print edition from Dark Horse Comics – we started to think of more after Hard Revolution, the first arc in our series, was received so warmly – and got the attention of places like The Hollywood Reporter, The New York Times, Publishers Weekly, and a print edition from Dark Horse Comic From across the nation, I could practically feel Monica and I saying to each other, “Well, what do we do now?”
The Black Ghost, Monica and I have always maintained, isn’t just another masked crimefighter out to do good. We dabble with the aspects that make up characters like Batman, The Question, Daredevil, and others, but we filter them through a lens of raw humanity, in a setting that feels more like a city we’ve all walked through than the gothic streets of some imaginary cities we’ve heard of. What would truly happen if a broken, messed-up individual was given the chance to do good – and redeem themselves in the process?” was the initial tale we were all interested in telling.
Monica Gallagher, a co-writer, added:
“At the end of Season One, Lara shown that she could be brave even in her worst moments.” However, in Season Two, she can no longer avoid the problems that have plagued her for years. We wanted to see what Lara would be like if she took responsibility for her previous faults and, maybe most importantly, focused on herself in this season. The other characters, like Lara, have the opportunity to grow and progress.”
On August 30, 2022, Amazon’s Comixology Originals exclusive digital entertainment line will release the first issue of The Black Ghost Season Two.
On January 3, 2023, Dark Horse Books will release The Black Ghost: Shame the Devil, a TPB that collects Season Two issues #1-5.
